Ligatures only where they fit

a colour change breaks them up, tracked text sets without them

Example document in the program showing the effect of “Ligatures only where they fit”

Medusa composes ligatures according to the properties of the characters involved. If colour changes inside a possible ligature, composition breaks it apart and preserves each character’s colour. Text with tracking also sets without ligatures so that the requested spacing stays visible. For a coloured magazine headline, you therefore do not need replacement characters to preserve the emphasis. Kerning to neighbouring characters remains. The rule applies to composition in both the editor and PDF.
