Interface in the Windows style2026-09-21

Sign-in page: «Stay signed in» sits right again

• The checkbox is a box again and its label sits next to it instead of at the right edge – in all four languages.

Link previews when you share a document

• Paste a document link into a chat or a social network and it now shows the document name and its first page instead of a bare address. The link alone is enough; the document itself stays as protected as before, and opening it still asks for a sign-in.

Forgot your password? Reset it by email

• The sign-in page now has «Forgot your password?». You enter your username or email address and receive a link that lets you set a new password within two hours. The link works once; resetting signs out all previous sessions.

Sign in with your email address too

• When signing in you can now enter either your username or the email address on your account – the field is now called «Username or email». Upper- and lower-case do not matter for the email.

IDML files: fonts are kept, missing ones reported

• When opening an IDML file, Medusa now keeps the fonts it knows and reports the missing ones instead of quietly substituting them. After the import it lists which fonts are missing; their original name is preserved so line breaks and copy fit come out right once you upload them.

East Asian and Thai line breaking

• Japanese, Chinese and Thai text now breaks correctly even without spaces between words. The main composition rules apply: a closing character, a comma or an ellipsis never starts a line, and there is no break after an opening bracket.

Calmer ragged edge

• The paragraph composer now weighs the whole paragraph for left-aligned, right-aligned and centred text too, not only for justified text. It hyphenates more sparingly and distributes the lines more evenly – the ragged edge becomes calmer without making the paragraph longer.

Text wrap with four gaps and side choice

• When wrapping text around an object you can now set the top, bottom, left and right gap separately, and choose whether the text flows only on the left, only on the right, or on the wider side.

Find and change on master pages and in notes

• Find and Change now also searches master pages and foot- and endnotes. Change All no longer skips this text.

Observer mode for admins

• Under View, admins can switch on an observer mode: they follow an active project live without changing anything. The others in the document see a clear «watching» hint with an eye instead of the mouse pointer – so it is expressly not silent monitoring.

Graphics from SVG with their layers

• An SVG can now be inserted as an editable graphic instead of only as an image: groups, paths, fills, text and embedded images become individual objects, and the SVG's layer tree is kept. When placing, a dialog asks whether to insert it editable or as a whole image.
• Copying a graphic from a drawing program and pasting it with ⌘V (Ctrl+V) breaks it up as well, as long as it is on the clipboard as SVG. Colours, line widths, opacity, gradients and rounded corners come along; whatever Medusa does not yet take over (such as clipping masks or filters) is listed in the message afterwards.

A new interface style, «Windows»

• Alongside Figma, Spectrum, Studio and Mac there is now «Windows»: the interface in the style of an application on Windows 11 – system font, square corners, 32 pixel controls, the blue line under the field you are typing in, and the selection marker beside the chosen row.
• The colours and measurements come from the open design files of Windows itself. Turning transparency effects off gives you solid menus.

Long documents, styles, preview2026-09-20

Zoom with the space bar

• ⌘ (Ctrl) together with the space bar turns the pointer into the zoom tool: drag to zoom to the rectangle, click to magnify, hold Alt to shrink. The space bar alone still pans the view, and ⌘⇧ keeps working as before.
• On the Mac press the space bar first and add ⌘ afterwards, otherwise Spotlight swallows the combination. If the window loses focus, the hand tool no longer gets stuck.

A new interface style, «Mac»

• Window › Interface now offers «Mac» alongside Figma, Spectrum and Studio: Medusa then looks like a native application on macOS 27 – system font, system colours, capsule-shaped buttons, translucent bars and panels, and an opaque canvas.
• The colours and measurements come from the system itself, not from an imitation. If you ask for reduced transparency in Accessibility, the glass turns into solid surfaces.

An honest note about PDF/X-4

• Medusa is a proof of concept: PDFs are built to the PDF/X-4 structure and checked by the program itself, but there is no independent certification. The note now appears in the export dialog next to the PDF/X-4 standard, in the result of the PDF/X check, in the book report and under Help › Licences and third-party works – in all four languages.

Licences in the Help menu

• Help › «Licences and third-party works …» shows the licence of the program, every third-party work shipped with it together with its rights holders, and the full licence texts to read.

The book as one PDF

• The combined book PDF carries the book's own title and identifier instead of the first part's. Page numbers, bookmarks and jump targets of every part are in it, including links that point from one part into another.
• It is only labelled PDF/X-4 when the finished file passes the check; otherwise the book report names the reasons. Fonts get their own subset prefix per part.
• Parts with different print profiles can no longer be combined into one PDF, in batch output as well as in a book.

Folders with subfolders

• The document overview shows folders as a tree beside the list: «All documents», «No folder» and your own folders, indented, each with a count that includes its subfolders.
• Create a subfolder with the «+» on a row, up to four levels deep. Drag documents onto a folder row, drag folders into each other, and drop either on «No folder» to take it out again. The expanded state is remembered.
• Deleting a folder never deletes documents: they and any subfolders move up one level. The document menu in the editor shows the same tree.

Writing your own extensions

• New under Help › «Writing extensions …»: a page showing how to add your own commands and panels to Medusa with a little JavaScript – with the complete interface and three examples to copy.

Folders from inside a document

• The menu at the file name assigns the open document to a folder, creates a new one for it or takes it out again. The entry shows where it currently sits, and the overview files it right away.

Composition and output fixed

• Line styles: lines mixing very different character sizes stay within the column again, and words no longer overlap. Measured, they used to run up to 36 mm out of the column, with word spacing squeezed into the negative.
• Footnotes longer than the column are split and continue in the next column instead of spilling out of the frame.
• Footnote and endnote numbers run consecutively even when conditional text is hidden; «keep with next» and «space between paragraphs of the same style» work across hidden paragraphs.
• In the separation preview, placed CMYK TIFF and PSD images show their own printing channels instead of a recalculated separation; screen and print PDF match. The plate used to be off by up to 46 percentage points.
• Prepress checks the resolution of placed CMYK TIFF and PSD images; the note about placed PDFs also appears in the composite view.
• A spot colour named like a process colour lands on the same plate on screen as in the PDF; two spot colours with the same name make one plate.

Styles from another document

• Loading styles brings every reference along: character styles used in nested styles, GREP styles, line styles and bullets, colours in paragraph rules, shading and borders, and the references inside object, table and cell styles. Table of contents styles, conditions, preflight profiles and the settings for footnotes, endnotes and the baseline grid travel too.
• The dialogue shows what would change («size: 34 → 40») and can add a style under its own name instead of replacing the one with the same name.
• Parent pages based on another parent page survive export and import in both directions, together with the objects they inherit.

Import and prepress

• Notes from an import are shown once when the document opens and can be dismissed.
• Preflight reports line-art images still stored in the old form, which cover instead of knocking out in print.
• Text in table cells now follows the «overprint black» rule on screen as well.
• The messages of the PDF/X check now appear in every language.

Linked objects

• You can choose who may read a document's published objects: anyone who has the document id (the default), or only people with access to the document. With «only with access» a book run updates the copies only for people who can open the source – every other part is named in the book report instead of being skipped in silence.
• An object can be published as a source object in its own document and then placed in any other: it arrives as a full copy with its text, images, fonts, colours and styles, and stays connected to the original. When the original changes, every copy follows – at the press of a button or with every book run. Position, size, rotation and layer belong to the document the object sits in.
• A copy is locked. Anyone who wants to deviate on purpose declares the deviation for a text: it stays as it is when updating, the panel counts the deviations, and one click discards them again.

Hiding single master objects

• The context menu of a page hides any single object of the master page on that page – the logo on a chapter opener, the folio on a title. The master page stays assigned, even when it comes from another document.

Book: align styles and indexes across all parts

• «Align styles …» compares swatches, paragraph, character, object, table and cell styles, hyphenation exceptions and PDF presets between the book and its parts. Line by line it shows beforehand what would change – old and new, each one tickable. Where a process colour would become a spot colour, the line is unticked and flagged. Each part saves a version first and takes everything over in one step.
• One switch in the book panel, and the table of contents and the index gather the entries of every part with their book page numbers. The jump marks lead into the other part where needed.

Images from other systems

• Images from a folder on the web (WebDAV or HTTP) or from Adobe Experience Manager Assets can be placed straight into the layout. The file is loaded into the document and remembers where it came from – «Update link» fetches the current version later. Addresses and accounts stay in your browser.

Extensions

• Your own menu commands and panels, described in a small file. The code runs sealed off and may only do what the interface allows; every change is a single step in the history.

Parent pages from other documents

• A parent page can be taken over from another of your documents: Layout › «Link parent page from another document …» copies it with everything on it – objects, text, images, fonts, swatches and styles.
• The Links panel shows whether the source has moved on and refreshes at the push of a button; one undo reverts it. The copy stays in the document even if the source is deleted, and the document never stores an access key.

Parent pages built on parent pages

• A parent page can be based on another one, up to four levels deep. What it inherits sits beneath its own objects and comes along on screen and in the PDF. Set it in the pages panel or in the properties.

Line styles as a list

• Instead of a single character style for the opening lines you can set several in a row: first line in small caps, second italic, third in colour. With «Repeat» the list starts over after its last entry.

Load styles from another document

• The new command in the Text menu lists your own documents and shows, before you apply anything, what is new, what differs and what stays the same. Only the ticked lines are taken over – in one step, with one undo.

Overrides now marked on character styles too

• When selected text departs from its character style, a «+» follows the style name – in the control bar, in the properties and now in the styles list as well.

Your own preflight profiles

• The thresholds for image resolution, hairlines, small type, ink coverage and fold clearance live in a named profile. «Vorgabe» is built in with the previous values; your own profiles can be saved, passed on and loaded from a file, just like the PDF presets.

Folders for your documents

• On the start page you can create, rename and delete your own folders. Drag a document onto a folder, or send it there with a right-click and «Move to …».
• Above the list sit «All documents», «No folder» and your folders with a count; one click filters, search and sorting still work alongside. Deleting a folder deletes no documents – they move back to «No folder». Folders belong to each person individually.

Book files

• Several documents can be run as a book: File › Create book, then the «Book» panel collects the parts. «Update book» numbers the pages continuously across all parts; if you want, every part starts on an odd page, and when a blank page is missing for that, the report says so and only appends it at the push of a button.
• «Output book» gives one PDF for the whole book or a ZIP with one PDF per part; «Check book» compares page size, bleed, print profile, spot colours and page count across all parts.
• The book only records which documents belong to it, never an access key.

Conditional text

• Passages can be given conditions and then shown or hidden: hidden text is neither composed nor exported, and the type reflows at once. Condition sets switch several conditions in one step.
• On screen a wavy line or a colour highlight marks conditional text; it never appears in the PDF. Find, spell check and the tables of contents and index skip hidden text.

Preview

• Separation and overprint preview now read the print data itself: CMYK images keep their channel values, RGB images go through their embedded profile, grayscale images stay on the black plate. Measured, the on-screen plate now differs from the print PDF by at most 1 %, where it used to be up to 51 %.
• For placed PDFs the preview says that it cannot show their plates exactly, instead of guessing them.

Table and cell styles

• Tables and cells can be saved as named styles and reused: one click in the Styles palette carries over rules, fills, alternating colours and insets; «Redefine from selection» updates every table using that style in a single step.
• Object styles gain a base style and a next style, and mark with «+» when an object differs from its style.

Table of contents

• Tables of contents follow named TOC styles: title with its paragraph style and, per included paragraph style, the level, the entry style, where the page number goes (after, before or not at all), the separator – tab, leader character or characters of your own – and a character style each for page number and separator.
• Entries on a level can be sorted alphabetically or run in; options include text on hidden layers, paragraph numbers and PDF bookmarks. The bookmarks follow the same structure.

Footnotes and endnotes

• Footnotes have document-wide options: numbering style (1, i, I, a, A or the sequence *, †, ‡, §), start number, restart on every page, in every section or in every story, prefix and suffix, paragraph style of the note, character style of the reference and spacing. Individual frames may still override them.
• The divider rule above the footnotes can be switched off and set in weight, colour, tint, length, offset and style, on screen and in the PDF. If you prefer, footnotes sit at the end of the story.
• Endnotes are new, with their own area and «Update endnotes».

Layers and objects

• In the layers list, groups can be expanded and collapsed, objects inside groups can be dragged and hidden individually.
• Layers get a colour of your choice and can be set to «do not print».
• Objects can overprint as a whole (fill and stroke) and be set to «do not print»: visible on screen, but not in PDF, PNG or SVG.

Prepress test document

• A new example on the start page: 15 pages, one check per page with a caption – spot colours in CMYK, Lab and RGB, gradients, overprint, opacity and blend modes, knockout and isolated groups, 1-bit line art at 1200 ppi, 16-bit images, Adobe RGB, sRGB with alpha, CMYK JPEG, placed PDFs, spot-colour shadows and feathered edges, fonts, bleed, marks and mixed page sizes. Open it, export it and measure the result in output preview or on press.

Language and line breaks2026-09-19

Language

• Language per text frame: a text's language is detected from the text itself (16 languages, plus Cyrillic and Greek) and drives hyphenation and spell checking. It can be fixed in the frame palette, and single paragraphs may differ. Hyphenation patterns now cover 25 languages, dictionaries German, English, French, Italian and Spanish.

Typography

• Styles as in professional typesetting: character styles build on a based-on style and know every character attribute; paragraph styles have a next style (after Enter a heading continues as body text, say) and a line style (the first line in small caps, for instance); nested styles also count sentences, know «up to, exclusive» and repeat to the end of the paragraph.
• New character attributes under «Character, more»: horizontal and vertical scale, skew, stroke with colour and weight, character background, underline and strikethrough with weight, offset, colour and type (solid, dashed, dotted, double), «No break» and language per character. Plus buttons for small caps, superscript and subscript – small caps come from the font where it has them, otherwise they are carefully simulated.
• Change case: UPPERCASE, lowercase, Title Case, Sentence case.
• «Clean up text» follows official Swiss, Duden and French typographic rules: narrow non-breaking spaces in «z. B.», before units, percent and currency, in «p. 12», «§ 5», «1 January»; single quotes; apostrophes also in «Rock ’n’ Roll» and «l’été»; en dash only between numbers (phone numbers and dates stay); «20.–»; Swiss time «14.30»; numbers from five digits grouped; in French narrow non-breaking spaces before ; ! ? and inside « ». Each paragraph by its own language.
• Typographer's quotes while typing, matching the paragraph's language (Text › Typographer's quotes).
• No line starts with a dash or an ellipsis any more, and «10–20» never breaks.
• New defaults: at least two lines at the start and end of a paragraph (no orphans and widows), headings stay with the following text, at least three letters after a hyphenation, outer margin wider than the inner one.
• Special characters menu with all spaces, non-breaking hyphen, em dash, minus, multiplication sign, discretionary line break and «Break ligature here»; if the font lacks a character, an equivalent one steps in.
• Kerning across format changes: if only the colour or another character attribute changes between two letters, the font's kerning pair still applies. Before, «To» with a coloured «T» set as if unkerned.
• Manual kerning between two characters: Alt+←/→ at the cursor (20/1000 em, with Cmd 100); with a selection it changes tracking; plus the «KP» field in the character palette. Cmd+←/→ jumps by word. The value goes into the PDF and the IDML.
• Spaces as in professional typesetting: em, en, third, quarter, sixth, thin and hair spaces, figure and punctuation space, non-breaking and narrow non-breaking space. Each has the right width even if the font lacks it – no more boxes. Non-breaking ones never break, fixed ones stay fixed in justified text, the non-breaking space stretches like a normal one.

Pages and spreads

• Fold-outs, gatefolds and roll folds: pages can be attached to the previous spread (right-click in the page list › Attach to previous spread), left of the spine too. In facing-page documents attached pages do not count – odd pages stay on the right, and the fold-out is numbered e.g. “3a”.
• Pages with their own size (right-click › Page size …), with buttons for fold-in pages 2 or 3 mm narrower. On left pages objects keep their distance to the spine; master items stick to the nearest page edge.
• Pages that differ from the document size are marked: a label with their size above the page and “≠” in the page list.
• In the PDF every page gets its own page boxes. New: “Spreads with fold-outs as spreads, other pages single” – the way printers want cover and inner pages. Fold lines at every inner edge of a spread, and IDML carries sizes and fold-outs.

Folded products

• Fold types as presets in Page size: roll fold (2 mm narrower per fold-in step), zigzag fold (equal widths) and paperback with flaps create outside and inside as spreads. The widths are starting values; every panel can be changed afterwards. Plus a spine width calculator from page count, paper weight and bulk.
• Fold preview: move the pointer over a folded spread in the page list and its panels fold in.
• Prepress warns about text in a fold or less than 4 mm from it, and when the widths do not match the fold type.
• PDF: dashed fold marks outside the bleed, crop and fold marks in registration colour (on every plate, spot colours included), page labels with the document's page numbers. The PDF/X check makes sure trim, bleed and media boxes nest.
• “No page number” per page (right-click in the page list): the master page's page number is left out, counting continues.

Variable fonts

• Variable fonts right on the text (Text › Variable font on text, or «Handles on text» in the panel): a box around the selected text carries handles – the corner square drags the width, the stem below the weight, the circle on the arc the slant, the bookmark the optical size. Custom axes such as contrast or roundness take free handles, all others sit below as drag tabs. Shift drags finely, a double-click resets, and one drag is one undo step.
• Save settings: store the current axes under a name and apply them again with one click – on the text or in the named-instances menu. Settings belong to the document.
• New «Variable fonts» example on the start page: Roboto Flex with 13 axes and Source Serif 4 with automatic optical size.

Typesetting

• Break characters (Text › Break characters): column, frame and page break, plus break to the next odd or even page. A paragraph can also start on the next odd or even page by itself.
• New paragraph options: keep with previous, equal spacing between paragraphs of the same style, last line of justified text left, centred or right, hyphenation across columns can be turned off.
• Hyphenation exceptions (Text › Hyphenation exceptions …): set your own break points per language or exclude words from hyphenation entirely; the list is part of the document.
• The discretionary line break now breaks without a hyphen and without width.
• More OpenType: numerators and denominators, scientific inferiors, titling alternates, capital spacing, unicase, historical forms and ligatures, initial, medial and final forms and up to 20 character variants – only what the font supports is shown.

Speed

• Large documents respond much faster: in a 500-page test a keystroke takes about 220 instead of 750 ms to the next frame, zoomed out a frame draws in 17 instead of 700 ms, and memory drops from over 500 to about 150 MB. Typing now sends only the changed paragraph instead of the whole story.
• Typing in long threaded stories: only the edited paragraph is broken into lines again, all others keep their lines and just move to their new place – with exactly the same typesetting as before. In a 500-page test a keystroke now takes about 35 instead of about 190 ms to the next frame; setting a whole story for the first time is faster too, and large documents no longer have to reset everything at once after many changes.
• Changing the size and position of superscript, subscript and small caps in the document settings takes effect immediately, as does a moved type area with the baseline grid.

Interface

• The start page is now an overview like in an app: a slim bar at the top with search, “New document” and “Import”, your documents right below – as dense tiles or as a list, newest first or by name. Each card shows page count, format, when it was last worked on and whether the link is shared for commenting or viewing only. Templates and formats follow below, smaller.
• Keyboard: “/” jumps to search, Enter opens the first match, the arrow keys move through the documents.
• New icons: calm, thin lines in one consistent set, from the tools down to the table borders. Indents, spacing and drop caps in the control bar now have proper icons instead of arrow characters.
• Settings now hold only what applies to you in this browser: two tabs, General and Translation. What applies to everyone in the document is under File › Document setup.
• The document name and «Page 1 of 5» sit at the top of the left column above the pages; the header is free for the menus.
• Tidier menus: fonts only under Text, «Translate document» under Text, «Toolbar on the left» under Window, no duplicate entries in the logo menu.
• Shortcuts: ⌘, opens the settings, ⌥⌘2 the split window, ⌘P export; ⌘[, ⌘] and ⌘D no longer take you out of the document; ⌥⌘L and ⌥⌘Ü work on the Mac too.
• New «Layout» menu: add, duplicate and delete pages, numbering and section, page size, apply parent page, guides – until now only in the page list's context menu. File is sorted into clear blocks: setup, place, check and package, export, versions and sharing.
• Menu at the document name: the arrow next to the name shows what concerns the document as a whole – rename, document setup, colour settings, share, approval, versions, export, preflight, package.
• The list of keyboard shortcuts is built from the menus and is always complete; ⇧⌘[ and ⇧⌘] work again.
• «Document setup» has tabs: Page, Grid (baseline grid and guide colours), Colour (output profile, RGB working space) and Interactive. «Colour settings …» opens the Colour tab directly. Only what you changed in the window is applied – what others change at the same time stays.
• Duplicate and delete a document right from the menu at its name: the copy takes all images along, but no versions or comments – anyone with an account can make their own copy, even with a view-only link. The person who created the document and admins can delete it.
• Layout › New parent page and Edit parent page; File follows the prepress order – tidy up, check, export, hand over – and leads back to the overview. Baseline grid and guide colours now live only in Document setup › Grid.
• On first launch Medusa asks which interface (Figma, Spectrum, Studio) and which appearance (system, light, dark) you want – the choice applies at once.
• The overview has a dark header with the medallion again, half as tall as before.
• The document name sits in bold at the very top of the left column, pages and layers below it; rename by clicking the name.
• More room in the control bar, larger buttons on floating panels.
• Layers: drag the whole row, rename with a double-click, eye and lock always visible. Drag objects in the list in front of or behind others or into another layer, and hide or show each object with its eye – hidden, it appears neither on screen nor in the PDF.
• Attach pages by dragging: drag a page in the page list onto another and hold for a moment, and it joins that spread.
• Admins can sort the document list by person, with a heading for each person.
• New «Swatches» panel: pick fill or stroke at the top, apply colour to the frame or the text, tint, swap fill and stroke, [None], [Paper], [Black] and all your own swatches – double-click to edit.
• Corner options (Object › Corner options …): size and shape per corner – rounded, bevel, inset, inverse rounded – on screen, in PDF, SVG and IDML.
• More compact dialogs: «New document» and «Document setup» with labels on the left, groups for page, margins, columns and bleed, portrait and landscape buttons, linked margins and a small page preview.

Account

• You can delete your own account: in the menu under your name › Delete account. A dialog first shows which documents go with it; deletion needs your password and your typed username. The last admin cannot delete themselves.
• Changing your password signs out every other session of that account.
• Feedback without an account: at /ideen anyone can send ideas, wishes and bugs, optionally with an email address for follow-up questions.

PDF

• «PDF/X-4» is only written into the PDF when the file meets the conditions: colours converted to CMYK, no links, form fields or films, print profile embedded. Otherwise the PDF is made without the label, and the export says why.
• Proof colours and the separations view on screen no longer affect the export.
• Drop shadows and feathered edges keep their colour in the print PDF: 100 % black stays pure black, a spot colour stays its own plate. Only the shape of the shadow and the fade of the edge are rasterised (300 ppi), the object itself stays vector. Shadows multiply, on screen as in the PDF, and no longer knock out the colours beneath.
• Opacity and blend modes apply to the object as a whole: fill and stroke at 50 % no longer cover each other twice – on screen as in the PDF.
• Overprint only applies to fill or stroke, not to text and images in the same frame; white never overprints.
• RGB images are converted to the document's print profile with their own colour profile, images without a profile in the document's RGB working space. CMYK JPEGs stay unchanged.
• Placed PDF: preview without comments and with a transparent background, pages with JPEG 2000 images and Asian scripts appear in full; the print PDF uses the visible crop and the page rotation. «PDF/X-4» is only written when the finished file passes the check without errors.
• Proof colours with paper white and print black, now for CMYK colours too.
• 100 % black overprints by its colour value, in your own swatches too; spot colour names with accents arrive intact.
• The PDF/X check is stricter: RGB in images, fills, gradients and transparency groups is an error, and overprinted white and embedded files are found. Uploaded profiles such as PSO Coated v3 are matched to their printing condition.

Export

• New export dialog: the preset and the standard at the top (none or PDF/X-4 – which locks what it does not allow), below it the tabs General, Marks and bleed, Output, and a summary with warnings before the download.
• Presets now belong to the document: whoever saves one makes it available to the whole team, with undo. They can be saved to and loaded from a file, travel with the brand kit and can be chosen in the output automation.
• Marks with crop marks, registration marks, page information and fold marks, weight 0.125 to 0.5 pt and offset in millimetres; bleed as in the document or with your own values for top, bottom, inside and outside – mirrored on left pages.
• Output to sRGB for screens (no CMYK in the PDF), spot colours optionally as process colours, each page as its own PDF in a ZIP with a naming pattern, opening view and full screen, hyperlinks, bookmarks and forms and media each switchable. Title and language are always in the PDF.
• The PDF is created in the background: the dialog closes at once, you keep working, and the file arrives when it is ready.

Prepress refinements

• Gradients between spot and process colours blend in the composite as on screen.
• 100 % black does not overprint inside transparent groups; the separation preview follows the same rule.
• Line art (1 bit) prints only its black, white stays transparent; grayscale images show on the black plate only in the separation preview.
• Spot colours named like «Cyan» or «All» become process colours on import.
• The PDF/X check finds more: registration colour inside the trim box, faulty multi-channel colours, overprinted white in spot colours too.
• Lab spot colours show at full saturation on P3 displays.

Placed PDFs

• Placed PDFs preview overprinting spot colours and varnish plates correctly instead of hiding the colours underneath.
• Faulty, protected or empty pages show a message and a placeholder instead of failing silently.

Spot colours

• Gradients with spot colours stay on their own printing plate in the PDF, including blends between spot and process colours.
• Spot colours can be defined in Lab or RGB and go into the PDF with their Lab value. When the output profile changes, their CMYK alternate is recalculated.
• Reserved names such as «Cyan» are blocked; the PDF/X check flags spot colours that share a name but have different alternates.

Print PDF

• «Overprint black» now also applies to fills and strokes in 100 % black, not only to text. Paper white still knocks out, and transparent objects stay unchanged.
• Line art (1-bit PNG, black-and-white palette PNG, 1-bit TIFF) goes into the PDF at full resolution, sharp and on the black plate only.
• 16-bit TIFF can be placed and is reduced to 8 bits; for 16-bit PNG the export reports the reduction.

Screen colours

• On wide-gamut displays (Display P3) the canvas shows CMYK colours, the colour proof and the overprint preview at full saturation instead of clipping them to sRGB.

Print profiles

• Medusa now ships the standard ECI profiles: ISO Coated v2 300 % (FOGRA39) and PSO Uncoated ISO12647 (FOGRA47), plus ISO Newspaper 26 (IFRA26) for newspaper printing. Images and RGB colours are separated the same way as in common applications using the same profiles.

Working on the page

• Dragging with the Alt key held creates a duplicate and leaves the original in place – even if Alt is pressed only while dragging. One undo removes both.
• Text frame options are compact: small groups in two columns; settings that depend on a checkbox appear only when it is ticked.
• The Swatches panel again shows for each swatch whether it is spot, CMYK, RGB or a gradient.

Links and file formats

• The Links panel lists every placed image and PDF with its page and status; from there you can jump to it, download the original or replace the file in all frames at once.
• TIFF, PSD and AI files can now be placed; CMYK images stay CMYK all the way into the print PDF.

Fonts in PDF

• Fonts are embedded as subsets, making PDFs much smaller. OpenType fonts with PostScript outlines (OTF) are now embedded correctly as CFF.
• Fonts whose license restricts embedding are embedded as well; the license is your responsibility.

More effects

• Inner shadow, feathering per side and global light for shadows. Groups can isolate blending and act as knockout groups.
• New «Effects» window with preview for object, stroke, fill and text.
• Very large effects are output at a lower resolution instead of being dropped. Prepress warns about effects on spot colours and non-separable blend modes.

Colour picker

• The colour picker shows what fits the colour: the four channels with ink coverage for CMYK, only the tint for spot colours, and a colour field with hue slider and numbers (RGB, hex, HSB) for RGB, OKLCH and P3.
• Tint and opacity are separate; opacity applies to fill, stroke or shadow.
• Changing values changes only the selected objects: a colour of their own is created and the named swatch stays as it is. «Convert to CMYK» uses the print profile.
• «On this page» and «Colours in selection» list the colours in use with their tint; a change there applies to the selection only. Plus an eyedropper for colour and tint.

Export dialog

• Page range with the document's page numbers, including «iv», «B-1», «7-» (to the end) and «+3» (third page from the start); if a number occurs in several sections the dialog says so instead of silently taking the last one.
• The dialog opens with the preset last used in the document; after a change it shows which preset you started from («… (changed)»). Overwriting your own preset asks first, built-in ones stay untouched.
• The note about the background export names the time of the exported state.

Guides and approval

• Guides as in professional layout: dragged onto a page they belong to that page only and stop at its edge; dragged onto the pasteboard beside the page they run across the whole spread.
• Review and approval: besides single text frames a whole page can be released (right-click in the pages list) – every text on it can then be edited by the reviewers.

Inspect

• Hovering over empty paper shows the size of the page, with bleed and for facing pages also that of the whole spread; the panel lists single page and spread.

Images in the PDF

• Images are recalculated per placement on export: only the visible crop, and above a threshold down to the target resolution (print: above 450 to 300 ppi, screen: above 225 to 150 ppi). A 6000 × 4000 pixel photo at 100 mm width takes 0.2 instead of about 40 MB in the print PDF.
• New Images tab in the export dialog with threshold, target and compression (lossless, or JPEG in three qualities for RGB output); «Small for the web» is back.
• Rotated phone photos (EXIF) appear in the PDF as on screen, greyscale images stay greyscale.

Effects

• Fill, stroke and content (text or image) each have their own opacity and blend mode – in the Effects panel, on screen, in PDF and in IDML.

Groups

• Groups carry opacity, blend mode, drop shadow and feathering as a whole: overlaps inside a semi-transparent group no longer cover twice, and the shadow falls once for the whole group – on screen, in PDF, SVG and IDML. Selecting a single object inside the group directly still sets that object's own values.

Colour on screen

• The overprint preview now mixes plate by plate like the print PDF: overprint, opacity and spot colours look the way they print. It runs on the graphics card and is about ten times faster; an unchanged view comes from the cache.
• Spot colours mix like ink on paper instead of adding up – midtones no longer turn too dark.
• On wide-gamut screens Chrome and Safari show the preview in Display P3: saturated cyan and green are no longer clipped.

Colour and exchange

• IDML: spot colours stay spot colours with their own plate. Pantone colours (Lab) get their alternate through the document's print profile and go back out as Lab on export; tints keep their value.
• Objects copied into another document bring their swatches along – gradient stops too.
• Placed PDFs appear at their original size; «Scale» 100 % means 1:1.
• A tab opened before an update exports again instead of failing with a loading error.

Security

• Several security issues and bugs fixed.

Fonts

• Variable fonts in styles: paragraph and character styles now show sliders for every axis of a variable font; ticked axes belong to the style, the others come from the font style. «New style from selection» carries set axes along.

Optical margin

• Optical margin alignment for the whole story, in the frame palette with a reference size: quotation marks, full stops, commas, dashes and slanted or round letters hang over the edge as far as the set size asks – the same in headings and body text. Single paragraphs can be left out; more characters hang than before, and after a quotation mark the next letter hangs a little too.

Line breaks

• Auto leading: button «A» next to the leading, the percentage of the type size sits under Spacing and hyphenation (default 120 %). In a line with mixed sizes the largest counts.
• Balance ragged lines: headings and short ragged paragraphs get lines of similar length instead of one long and one short – with the same number of lines.
• Ignore optical margin: single paragraphs can be left out of the text's optical margin alignment.

Interface

• More reliable settings and document setup: unit, spell check and the control bar survive a reload, the reference point takes effect at once, «Lock guides» now applies only to you, two people can change different document settings at the same time without overwriting each other, and the History panel is now labelled correctly in every language.

Interface

• A third interface style, «Studio»: dense and calm, neutral grey, fine lines, groups with their title in the border, colour only for focus and selection – light and dark, switchable under Menu › Interface and in the settings.

Formulas, forms, interactive PDF and translation2026-09-18

Text frames

• New dialog Object › Text Frame Options (Cmd/Ctrl+B, also as a button in the palette) for all selected text frames: columns fixed, with fixed or flexible width; inset for each side separately; vertical alignment top, centre, bottom or justified with a paragraph spacing limit; first baseline by ascent, cap height, x height, leading or fixed, with a minimum; a custom baseline grid per frame; «Ignore text wrap»; footnote spacing per frame; rules between columns, on screen and in the PDF.
• Vertical alignment now applies in every frame of a thread and in every column, not only in the last single-column frame.
• Auto-size: frames follow the text in height, width or both. A reference point decides which corner or edge stays put; minimum width and height set a lower bound.

Lists and columns

• Bullets and numbering as a dialog of their own (button «…» next to the list buttons): any character, numbers as 1, 01, a, A, i or I, patterns such as «(^#)» or «^1.^2» for nested lists, five levels with their own counter and indent, restart at any number, continue across text in between, numbers right-aligned before the text and a character style for the marker.
• Span columns: a paragraph can now span 2, 3 or 4 columns instead of only all of them, starting from the column it is in – only the spanned columns continue below it. New as well: «Split column» spreads the paragraph evenly over 2 to 4 sub-columns, with inside and outside gutters (Paragraph palette › Composition).

IDML

• IDML export under File › Export as IDML: pages, master pages, layers, threaded text frames with their options, paragraph and character styles, process and spot colours, gradients, shapes, paths, groups, tables and footnotes are written to the IDML file. Images are linked from a «Links» folder next to the .idml; both come together in a zip.
• More complete IDML import: groups stay groups, nested ones too; a table standing alone in a frame becomes a real table with merged cells and header rows; footnotes arrive as footnotes; plus text wrap, opacity, blend mode, drop shadow, feather, all text frame options, lists, keep and column options and the language.

PDF

• Open and edit PDF: File › Import now accepts PDF and turns it into a document with real objects – shapes and curves, text in frames (fonts are substituted), images. CMYK stays CMYK, spot colours arrive as swatches with name and CMYK equivalent, tints stay tints.
• Placing a PDF offers three ways: place (as vectors into the print PDF), place linked (a new version of the same file goes into every frame via Object › Update link) or insert editable (as a group of separate objects). The PDF's spot colours appear in the swatches in every case.

Colour

• View › Overprint Preview (Alt+Shift+Cmd+Y): every printing plate is computed separately and combined through the print profile. Overprinting yellow on cyan appears green, knocked-out areas stay clean, spot colours mix with what lies beneath, 100 % black text overprints, as is usual in prepress. The same rule now applies in the separations preview.

Signing in

• Sign in with «Stay signed in»: ticked (the default) keeps you signed in for a month, even across a browser restart; unticked, the session ends when the browser closes or after twelve hours without activity – meant for other people's computers.

Offline

• The installable version now carries the app icon: 192 and 512 points plus a maskable version with a margin so round masks cut nothing off.
• Installable version: the program now ships a manifest, icons and a service worker. Once opened, it can be installed as an app and started without a network – program files, fonts, colour profiles and the colour management sit in the browser's cache.
• Offline documents: the start page has an «Offline» section with its own button. These documents live in IndexedDB, that is in this browser only, and can be created, edited, exported and checked without a server – images and fonts included. The header says «Offline · this device only».
• What does not work offline is stated where you look for it: on the start page, in the header and in the share window. Working together, comments, video chat and links need the server. «Share › Put on the server» moves an offline document there, images and all, and from then on it can be shared.

Interface

• Landing page: the six specialities have become nine – new are PDF/X-4 with a check, working offline and PDF forms.
• Program and landing page are delivered separately.
• PDF/X check: the export now identifies the PDF as PDF/X-4 (XMP with GTS_PDFXVersion, trapped entry, file identifier, version 1.6) and can check the finished file straight away: output intent with its embedded ICC profile, embedded fonts, RGB in fills, text and images, page boxes, annotations inside the trim box, encryption, JavaScript, attachments and transparency. File › Check PDF/X builds the delivery PDF in the background and checks it right away; from the report you can also check somebody else's PDF. There is also a new checkbox to leave out links and form fields – without it no PDF/X delivery passes.
• Prepress with many images: each image file is now read once instead of once per frame. A document with 500 image frames on eight files took over a quarter of an hour; now it takes five seconds.
• Drawing: text lines outside the visible area are skipped. Panning a 500-page document drops about a fifth of the time per frame; exports are unchanged, there the visible area is the whole page.
• Fixed: in the Figma style the large headings on the start and sub pages were lighter than on the landing page. Only the headings inside the editor stay sober now.
• New «Stress test» tile on the start page: builds 500 pages with about 2.5 million characters, threaded columns, an image on every page, 50 tables and vectors – to see how the program holds up with large documents.
• Page thumbnails in the left column are only drawn when they are actually visible in the list. With 500 pages a full pass used to take minutes; now the document opens in seconds.
• Switchable unit: millimetres, centimetres, inches, points or picas, under View › Unit or in the settings. Panels, rulers, measurements and inspect follow; the document itself stays in millimetres, and a suffix typed into a field («30mm» in an inch field) still wins over the display unit.
• The toolbar can be moved to the left edge under View › Toolbar on the left; upright instead of across, remembered in the browser.
• «Figma» is now the default style; «Spectrum» stays available under Help › Interface.
• The same information used to appear three times on screen. Now the document name is only in the header, «Page 2 of 8» next to it, and format and extent appear once each in the control bar and the pages panel.
• A second interface style: under Help › Interface (or in the settings) you switch between «Spectrum» and «Figma». Figma is more sober and compact – smaller type, flat radii, fields as grey boxes without borders, blue accent, narrower panels. Both come in light and dark, and the choice is remembered in the browser.
• Swatches now carry a small mark for their kind: CMYK as four quadrants, RGB as three stripes, spot as a ring, gradient as a ramp. One glance tells you what gets its own printing plate and what does not – in the panel and in every colour picker.
• The «Sync» button in the split window is gone. The second view always stays independent – that is what it is for.
• Landing page: the feature list is now called «What is inside» instead of «Everything in the first release». In the lightbox every image sits in the same-sized box – before, the picture jumped as soon as a title wrapped.
• Landing page: screenshots and share images now come in all four languages – the French page shows the French interface, the Spanish one the Spanish. The «three specialities» have become six (new: chat and video chat, Google Fonts, approval without an account), and the feature list is re-sorted into twelve groups and brought up to date.
• Fixed: in French and Spanish, «What's new» showed the German release notes instead of the English ones.
• Video chat: as soon as somebody else is on the same document, a camera icon appears next to the speech bubble. One click and you see and hear each other – picture and sound go straight from browser to browser, only the negotiation passes through the server. Microphone and camera can be muted separately. Up to about six people; beyond that it would need a media server.
• The video chat finds the other side even behind a router; strict company networks may still get in its way.
• Camera and microphone are only released on the editor page; on every other page they stay blocked.
• Show hidden characters (View, Alt+Cmd+I): pilcrow, a dot for a space, a ring for a non-breaking space, an arrow across the whole tab. They stay away in preview and at small sizes.
• The interface now speaks **French and Spanish** as well as German and English: around 2000 strings per language, patterns with inserted numbers and names included. Pick it under Help › Language or in the settings; the dictionary is loaded on its own, so only the language in use reaches the browser.
• The server-rendered pages – sign-in, profile, email confirmation – and the landing page speak all four languages too. For French and Spanish the release notes, sample documents and screenshots show the English version.
• Delete all guides is now in the View menu.
• Fixed: on the landing page the big logo was solid black – the two-tone paths had not been given their colour. This also affected the share image for chat and social networks.
• Chat: as soon as somebody else is on the same document, a speech bubble appears in the bottom right. The messages belong to the document, so they stay when everyone has left, and they never show up in the undo history. A small counter marks what is unread. Comment and view links can speak too – questions usually come from the people who are not allowed to change anything.
• The baseline grid has its own panel: start, increment, colour and visibility in one place instead of scattered through «Document setup». The same fields are now in the guides dialog too.
• A paragraph can now put **only its first line** on the baseline grid; the following lines keep their own leading. In the paragraph panel and in the control bar as «1st only».
• Guides can be clicked. The selected guide is drawn boldly and appears in the panel with its position to a tenth of a millimetre – typing instead of aiming. Plus delete (backspace works too) and a lock for all guides in the document (View › Lock guides).
• «Duplicate and offset» can work with the **gap** instead of the offset: a 5 mm gap between 20 mm wide objects means a 25 mm offset, and the program now works that out.
• Align: next to even distribution there is a field for a fixed gap. Two objects are enough for that – even distribution still needs three.
• Google Fonts: Fonts › magnifier (or File › Google Fonts …) lets you search, preview and install around 1800 families straight into the document. The preview draws the real outlines, not a stand-in typeface. Variable families arrive as one file covering the whole weight axis, static families style by style. The TTF version is always fetched – it is the only one that can be embedded in a PDF.
• Guides can go to the back: View › Guides in back puts them underneath the objects. Handy as soon as large areas are involved and the lines only get in the way.
• As soon as something in the document moves, prepress disappears from the menu and the header. An animation is not a printed product, and the messages about bleed and resolution were just noise there.
• Share image for link previews: sharing id42.xyz in chat, Slack or a social network now shows a card with the big logo, the title and the address – in all four languages (1200 × 630, produced by scripts/og-bild.mjs). The tool itself carries the same card.
• The emails have a design now: a light header band with the wordmark, a title, a button and a small footer – plain and image-free so they look the same in every inbox. Plus a preview line for the inbox list.
• Every email arrives in the recipient's language: whoever signs up in English also gets the approval email in English, no matter which language the admin happens to be using.
• The «Ideas and bugs» page is now Feedback & feature requests and has a header of its own: light band, title, lead and the big logo – like the start page, only light.
• Reporting happens in a dialog instead of a form in the page, with up to four images (screenshots say more than three paragraphs). The images hang on the entry and open at full size.
• A thumbs up instead of an arrow: a quiet tile with a counter, coloured only once you have voted.
• A small header on the «Accounts» and «Ideas and bugs» subpages: a light band with the logo and the name, and the way back to the overview.
• The ideas page and user management are now fully translated, including the date format and the line under each name.
• Fixed: fields for email, address (clickTag) and phone looked like the browser's own – input types are no longer listed one by one, they are all styled alike.

View and examples

• Fixed: in content mode (double-click an image) the corner handles could not be dragged. They now scale the image inside the frame – the opposite corner stays put and the frame keeps its size.
• Separation preview: when exactly one plate stays visible in the separations panel it is shown in greyscale – the way a press shows it. A cyan-coloured cyan plate tells you nothing about coverage. Several plates stay in colour as a composite.
• The sample brochure now comes in German and in English; it is created in the language of the interface.

Accounts with email confirmation

• Anyone creating a profile gets an email with a confirmation link (HTML and text). User management then shows "Email confirmed" instead of "Email unconfirmed" – you can approve either way, so a silent mail failure never locks anyone out.
• On approval a second email goes out: "your profile is open", with the username and a link to sign in.
• The confirmation link works once and for 30 days; "Send email again" in user management issues a fresh one.
• Emails go through your own mail server or the hosting's.

Security and multi-user operation

• Several security improvements.
• Blocked accounts are signed out immediately, not only at the next sign-in.
• Even with many people working at once, no change gets lost.

Tidying up and micro typography

• "Clean text": language-aware micro typography (de-CH, de-DE, English, French, Italian) with 18 rules – quotation marks, dashes, protected spaces, measurements, percent signs, ellipses, double spaces and more. With presets, for the selection or the whole document, and colour highlighting of every change that can be removed again.
• Tidy-up assistant ("Tidy up document"): paragraphs with identical overrides become a paragraph or character style, duplicate styles and swatches are merged, redundant overrides are resolved and unused things are removed. A preview comes first, a single undo is enough afterwards.
• GREP in find and replace: its own mode with eight templates (double spaces, dates, phone numbers, email, numbers with units …) and back references $1 to $9 in the replacement.
• Paragraph shading and borders: colour, tint, insets, corners and a line per side – per column and across frame boundaries, in the PDF as well.
• Saved export presets with an automatic file name suffix; seven presets are built in (low-end PDF, print PDF, web PDF, image for social …).

Accounts and feedback

• A page of its own for user management: self sign-up with an email address, approval by the admins, blocking and unblocking, setting a password, creating an account – with filters by state and a search across name, email and note.
• New "Ideas and bugs" page: report suggestions, bugs and feature wishes, filter by kind and state, sort, with a thumbs up and a counter, replies and a state set by the admins.
• Report a bug right in the tool under Help, with environment details; without an account the report goes to the clipboard.

Formula setting

• Formulas as their own object: LaTeX-style input with fractions, roots, sums, integrals, superscript and subscript as well as Greek letters.
• Preview while typing, examples at the press of a button, double-click reopens the formula; the frame adapts to the setting.
• In the PDF formulas are vector outlines, variables italic and figures upright as usual in mathematical setting.

PDF forms

• Any object can become a form field: text field (also multiline), check box, radio button with groups, dropdown, list box, signature and button.
• Required, read-only, help text and font size per field; the export produces a fillable AcroForm.

Interactive PDF

• Buttons with actions: open an address, go to a page, show or hide a field, print, reset the form, full screen.
• Place videos (MP4, WebM): a still image in the layout, embedded with a play action in the interactive PDF, optionally starting when the page opens.
• Page transitions for full-screen presentation under “Document setup”.

Data and languages

• Linked sources are two-way now: changes in the document can be written back to Excel, CSV and Word files, downloaded, or updated automatically.
• Data merge with Excel as a source, a filter by field content and the new output “New document to keep working on”.
• Translation of whole documents with AI (free services without a key, Google Gemini, Anthropic, OpenAI, DeepL) – as a language layer in the document or as a duplicate. The key stays in the browser.

Working comfortably

• Horizontal menu bar like on macOS; only settings, language, appearance and account remain under the logo.
• Settings window with everything that is stored: name, language, appearance, AI provider and key, workspace, reference point, unit.
• Split window: a second view of the same document with its own zoom and section, a draggable divider, side by side or one above the other, optionally moving in sync.
• Control bar for text split into character and paragraph values (A / ¶) – nothing needs scrolling any more.
• Create guides: columns and rows with gutters, relative to the page or the type area, plus your own colours for margins, columns, guides and grid.

Linked content

• Place Excel (.xlsx), CSV and Google Sheets as a table: the content stays connected to its source and refreshes with one click.
• Word files stay linked after placing and can be read in again.
• “Links” panel with source, time, refresh, another file and unlink; on request the document refreshes everything when it opens.
• Import (IDML, package, document file) is now available inside the document under File as well.

Colour

• Colour models OKLCH and Display P3 in the swatch – sRGB is stored, the values you entered are kept, hex is the fallback.
• RGB working space now also “Compatible with Display P3”.
• Separations can be shown and hidden one by one in inspect mode (composite of the chosen plates).

Workspaces

• Tab hides all panels and brings them back.
• A second column per dock from the menu; workspaces (typesetting, prepress, copy editing, animation, library) and your own.

Typesetting and output

• Kerning metric, optical or none. Optical samples the outlines and matches the closest distance to the reference distance of two straight stems.
• PDF: slug line at the crop marks with document name, page, date and colour profile.
• Format catalogue with 49 formats for print, social media, web and video; screen formats with exact pixel sizes at 96 ppi.

Interface

• English is the new default; German is one click away in the language menu.
