Kerning

metric from the font's own pairs (even across style changes), optical, or by hand with Alt+arrow

Where to find itWindow › Properties › More

Metric kerning uses the font’s kerning pairs, including across style changes. Optical kerning calculates spacing from the glyph shapes. For a large magazine headline, you can additionally adjust individual letter pairs by hand. The manual value applies at the cursor between the two characters and supplements the chosen method. You can correct a conspicuous pair without changing tracking for the entire headline. Typesetting carries the spacing through to the PDF.

How to do it

  1. Place the cursor between the two characters.
  2. Open Window › Properties.
  3. Open More in the text section and choose the kerning method.
  4. Adjust the value under Kern or with ⌥← and ⌥→.
